November 12, 2026 7:00 – 9:00 PM
Online
Mary Virginia Orna, OSU former professor of chemistry at the College of New Rochelle will explore the fascinating intersection of chemistry, art, and archaeology, drawing on her research conducted during her sabbaticals in Israel and Italy. She will discuss the analysis of ancient pigments and dyes from archaeological sites in the Judean Desert and the ancient fortress of Masada, as well as her work involving the examination of medieval artists' manuals characterizing blue pigment recipes. The presentation will also highlight applications of archaeological chemistry to famous artifacts and controversies, including the forgeries of Han van Meegeren and the Shroud of Turin.
