Teacher Certification & Professional Learning Programs

Certification Procedures

Teacher certification is conferred by the New York State Education Department to candidates who meet all requirements for the issuance of the certificate. The School of Education's graduate programs lead to initial/professional certification recommendation depending on the candidates' teaching experience and academic preparation.

To be eligible for certification, you must:

Professional Teaching Certification/Additional Teaching Certifications for Certified Teachers

professional certification recommendation also requires documentation of three years of teaching experience at the same grade range/subject area as the certificate sought. During one of the years, the candidate must have been mentored by an experienced teacher or school administrator.

This clinically-rich grant-funded program offers teachers a tuition reduced pathway to ESOL certification, with the goal of addressing the shortage of NYC teachers in English as a Second Language/English as a New Language.

This intensive program of STEM pedagogy courses and professional experiences will prepare 14 in-service K-12 teachers of math and science to become quality STEM Teacher Leaders.

STARTALK: The Korean Language and Culture Summer Program

STARTALK, the Korean language and culture summer program at Mercy University, just wrapped up in summer 2019. Held over three weeks, middle-schoolers from diverse language and cultural backgrounds engaged in a program of learning about and experiencing Korean language, art, music and dance.
