Mercy College Alumna Appointed New York City Schools Chancellor
Meisha Ross Porter, M.S. ’03, H.D. ’20, has been named New York City Schools Chancellor by Mayor Bill de Blasio effective March 15. Ross Porter was Mercy’s commencement speaker for the School of Education in May 2020 and has also received an Alumni Achievement Award.
“I couldn’t be more excited to see a Mercy graduate chosen to lead the largest public school system in the nation,” said Mercy College President Tim Hall.
In the announcement of Ross Porter’s appointment, de Blasio states, “Today is an historic day for New York City schools. Meisha Porter is a homegrown New Yorker who knows what it takes to give every kid the high quality public school education they deserve.”
Ross Porter currently serves as the Executive Superintendent for the Bronx, Districts 7-12, with the New York City Board of Education, a position in which she has held since 2018. Ross Porter was an English teacher at the Bronx School for Law, Government and Justice before spending 11 years there as Principal. She was named Superintendent of Community School District #11 in 2015. The Bronx resident earned her master’s degree in School Administration and Supervision from Mercy College.
