May 15 Message from the Office of the President

Dear Mercy College Faculty,

Yesterday, in a proceeding at the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) offices, the NLRB counted the mail ballots in the election concerning whether Mercy College adjunct faculty will be represented for collective bargaining by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).

Adjuncts who participated in the election have voted in favor of SEIU representation. Voter turnout for the election was low, with only 540 votes from an eligible voter pool of 853 adjuncts. I want to thank all of you that participated in this process.

The election results are not considered final until the NLRB officially certifies them, which typically takes place after seven days, but this timing can vary. Once the outcome of the election is certified, the college will bargain with representatives from the SEIU and our adjuncts in good faith, and we hope to reach a consensus that balances the requests of the faculty and the ongoing needs of the college and its students.

As I have stated a number of times throughout this process, this is a critical time for the college as we continue to adapt to the constantly evolving challenges and opportunities of the relationship with The College of New Rochelle. Mercy College is committed to continuing to work together and strengthening our relationship with our adjunct colleagues, and we will keep you posted on any further developments.

Sincerely,

Tim Hall
President
