Journal Article Published by Professor Marc Campo Studies Use of Exoskeletons in Treating Spinal Cord Injuries

Marc Campo, Ph.D., professor of Physical Therapy, was part of a large research team that published an article in Spinal Cord, the journal of The International Spinal Cord Society. The article, entitled, "Walking improvement in chronic incomplete spinal cord injury with exoskeleton robotic training (WISE): a randomized controlled trial,” documented the results of a clinical trial that studied whether training using a robotic exoskeleton could help individuals with chronic incomplete spinal cord injuries improve their ability to walk.

The study concluded that robotic exoskeleton gait training can improve ambulation ability. Robotic exoskeletons may also reduce the heavy manual labor required of physical therapists, which puts them at risk of injury. The authors recommended further study with more participants.
