Psychology Overview

The 4+1 B.S./M.S. Psychology program option offers a unique opportunity to qualified undergraduates in Psychology to complete their Bachelor's and Master's degree in just five years.

The program is designed so students are able to complete 12 credits of study at the graduate level in their senior year that will count towards both their undergraduate and graduate degrees.

That means you are able to earn your master's degree faster and jump right into a rewarding career. 

B.S. Psychology

Students in the program gain an in-depth knowledge of human behavior. You'll learn how people think, feel and act and gain the skills you'll need for a successful future in the field. 

M.S. Psychology

Our students gain experience in theory, research methods and the practice of psychology. The program sets up students to pursue PhD programs which in turn qualifies students to pursue clinical, counseling or research roles.

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the M.S. Psychology Program work in a variety of professional settings. Recent graduates have found employment opportunities in the following capacities:

  • Research assistant
  • Non-for-profit program director
  • Mental health technician, mental health worker
  • Case manager in human services and substance use settings
  • Adjunct college instructor

The program can be utilized as a steppingstone to a PhD application. Students interested in pursuing a PhD are encouraged to take advantage of the many opportunities that the Program has to offer to strengthen their application to doctoral programs.

Application Requirements

Students who meet the following admission requirements will be permitted to progress to the graduate portion of the 4+1 program:

  • Minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA in major courses
  • B or better in PSYN 370 Statistics for the Social & Behavioral Sciences
  • A personal statement describing the reason they are pursuing a master’s degree, why they are choosing Mercy, and their future career goals.
  • 2 Letters of Recommendation
  • Resume
  • Interview

Yes, you have the option to register for as many online courses as you want. All required courses for the program are offered online. 

The course number indicates the level of difficulty. We encourage that students begin the required courses early in your studies. Students don't need to complete the required courses before the elective courses. 

Typically, students become providers of psychological services in the workplace, under supervision, in agencies, hospitals and other therapeutic environments.

Yes, the B.S./M.S. Psychology degree will give you the skills and degree needed to pursue further study in a PhD Psychology program. 

Students should apply to the graduate portion of the B.S./M.S. Psychology program in the fall of their Senior year.

Students in the 4+1 B.S/M.S. program must meet with their PACT Mentor or MS Psychology Program Director to plan their courses and to review the plan of study prior to course registration. Students will plan their program of study with the Program Director in consideration of individual career interest.
