Transferring From a 4-Year University
After four years of studying hard in high school, you finally get to college. But as time goes on, you may find that your choice isn't the best fit for you anymore, or you want to pursue a major that your college doesn't offer.
While the idea of transferring can be daunting, it doesn't have to be, especially with the right tools and people to point you in the direction you want to go. If you're looking for a school that makes the transfer process a breeze, Mercy University is ready to welcome you.
Reasons Why You May Want to Transfer
Everyone has different answers to the question, “Why are you transferring?” Here are some of the most common reasons:
- I want more from my education: Wanting more out of your education is a great reason to transfer to a school that challenges you while igniting your passions
- I want more financial aid opportunities: Every school offers different financial aid options. You may want to transfer to a place with lower tuition or more scholarships to take advantage of.
- I want more extracurricular experiences: The college experience is more than just academics. If your current school has limited opportunities to connect with your peers outside of class, it may be worth transferring somewhere that allows you to feel fulfilled inside and outside the classroom.
- I want to change my major: Let's say you chose your current university because you wanted a degree in computer science. After a few classes, you decide to switch to nursing, which your current school doesn't offer. Changing your major is totally okay, and switching colleges can give you access to the right program
- I don't feel like I fit in here: College is a place to discover who you are and who you want to be, and feeling like your college isn't a good culture fit can make it hard to spread your wings. Finding a university that meets your values, is the right size or is in a location that works for you — all these factors can make a major difference in creating a positive college experience.
How to Get Started With the Transfer Process
Ready to make Mercy your new home? Take the following steps to get started:
- Talk to our admissions team: If you have any questions or want to know exactly how your credits will apply, our transfer admissions team is here to help!
- Gather application materials: The specific documents you need with your application vary based on which degree you're pursuing. Our admissions team can help you determine which documents you need when applying, but you will usually need transcripts from any school where you intend to transfer credit from.
- Send in your application: Your application due date will depend on which program you want to transfer into. Most offer rolling admissions, meaning you can apply any time before the start of the term and still get accepted. Some programs follow our priority application deadlines — March 15 for fall admissions and December 15 for spring admissions. After you submit your application and all supporting documents, you'll hear from us within two weeks.
We invite you to reach out to our transfer admissions team with any questions and hope to welcoming you as a new Maverick soon!
