General Accounting: Data Analytics Overview

Today, accountants are performing tasks that require analytical skills at increasing rates namely due to large amounts of data exchanged across a host of industries. There are many applications of data analytics in the accounting field that can help accountants identify trends or patterns in data that assist in decision-making.

Our program combines a general business and accounting background with skills in data analysis and critical thinking to prepare students for careers in accounting and business analytics, consulting, and strategic and operational management. Modern accountants need to develop an analytical mindset in order to keep up with industry trends and remain competitive in the workforce.

Career Opportunities

With a B.S in General Accounting, data analytics specialization, your career opportunities will be vast. You will be prepared to serve in various accounting and business-related analyst roles including payroll, budgeting, auditing, taxation, financial planning, and private business and government operations management to name just a few.

The data analytics specialization program enables students to sit for professional examinations such as for the:

  • Certified Management Accountant (CMA),
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA)
  • Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE)

The specialization does not enable students to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination. However, additional appropriate coursework can be completed to address the necessary CPA Examination requirements.

Undergrad accounting programs are offered in the day and evening (and some classes on weekends) at both the Dobbs Ferry and Bronx campuses (with some introductory courses offered in the evening in Manhattan).

Yes, faculty are always ready to help students with questions about what courses to take, the sequencing of courses, and career opportunities, including internships and cooperative education.

Business Core: 27 Credits
General Accounting & Specialization: 24 Credits
Open Electives: 9 Credits

Total: 120 Credits

*ECON 125, ECON 220, ECON 221, ECON 230, MATH 116 and MATH 120/CISC 120 or CISC 131 are Prerequisites for the major and must be used to fulfill general education requirements.

  • BLAW 240 Business Law I

  • ANLC 250 Introduction to Data Analytics

The University's 15-credit residency requirement in the major of General Accounting with a Specialization in Data Analytics must be met with 12 credits in Accounting (ACCT) courses numbered 250 or higher, excluding ACCT 380 and ACCT 381 plus MGMT 460 Strategic Management (cc) (Senior-level capstone course). 

  • ACCT 300 Intermediate Accounting I
  • ACCT 301 Intermediate Accounting II
  • MGMT 460 Strategic Management (senior-level capstone course)
  • Any two additional Accounting (ACCT courses except ACCT 380 or ACCT 381, Internship in Accounting I or II).
  • ACCT 261 Computer Applications for Accountants
  • ACCT 410 Accounting Information Systems

Plus one of the following courses:

  • ANLC 310 Communicating with Data
  • ANLC 320 Applied Statistics with R & SPSS
  • ANLC 330 Relational Database Management with SQL

Any three courses

The major in General Accounting with a Specialization in Data Analytics meets the educational requirements for candidates applying to take the Certified Management Accountant (CMA) Examination. The major in General Accounting with a Specialization in Data Analytics does not meet the educational requirements for candidates applying to take the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Examination.
