Brigitte DeSane

Mercy College students are determined to make the most out of college and experience everything the College has to offer. That drive is particularly evident in junior Brigitte DeSane ’20.

In addition to her communication disorders studies, DeSane is co-president of the Honors Association and a senator in the Student Government Association. The close-knit Mercy community has energized DeSane and inspired her activities on campus.

“Having the ability to put yourself out there is so valuable. Being here has given me the ability to make an impact and shine,” said DeSane.

DeSane chose Mercy because of the communication disorders program and the College’s on-campus speech and hearing center.

“Back when I was a kid, my younger sister had speech therapy so I saw the difference it can make in a person’s life,” said DeSane. “I knew I wanted to pursue health sciences, but I wanted something different from med school. It’s so rewarding to watch people progress and no two days are the same — which keeps it interesting,” said DeSane.

DeSane also sees the important work speech-language pathologists do through her observations in the speech and hearing center. Next year, DeSane is working toward being able to work in the clinic.

After she graduates, DeSane is planning to continue her studies in Mercy’s graduate communication disorders program.
