The electronic system will enable registered students with Mercy College e-mail addresses (e.g., jdoe@connect.mercy.edu) to submit questions related to many academic subjects. Students should be aware that they may post questions anytime, but that tutors may take 24 - 48 hours to respond. Apart from providing students with online access to tutors, the platform will provide students and faculty with the opportunity to share knowledge across all five campuses, even when they are unable to travel to learning centers. Frequently Asked Questions

When should I come to the Learning Center?

  • If you are earning C's and you want B's, B's and you want A's...etc.
  • If you want to improve your study and/or learning skills and are not sure how to do it on your own.
  • If you are getting feedback in the form of low grades on tests, quizzes or assignments.
  • If you have an uncertain feeling that things are not making sense to you.
  • If you feel overwhelmed by the amount of work

Do I need an appointment to come to the Learning Center?
The Learning Center provides a combination of drop-in and by appointment tutoring schedules depending on the subject and the campus. Call the Learning Center closest to you to find out their scheduling policies. If you want to make an appointment please schedule one in advance so that you can receive help at a time which best fits your schedule. If you choose to drop in you will receive help on a first come first serve basis

Are there tutors in every subject?
We provide a wide range of tutoring to support a broad spectrum of courses, but many of the higher level courses may require more time to locate. Sometimes it is not possible to locate a suitable tutor for upper level courses.

How long will it take to find a subject tutor for me?
It takes between 3-10 business days depending on the availability of a tutor. It is not always possible to find a qualified tutor in the area requested, but we make every effort to accommodate.

    How do I request tutoring?

  • Walk into any of the Learning Centers and fill out a tutor request form
  • E-mail tutor requests to tutoring@mercy.edu
  • Call 914-674-7402 and request tutoring by phone
  • Go to the Learning Center Student Resources section below and complete the tutor request form.

    How much does tutoring cost?
Tutoring is free of charge to all Mercy students.

Do I need to prepare for a tutoring session?
You will get the most out of a tutoring session if you come prepared. Coming prepared means attempting assignments and coming with questions for your tutor.
Please come to all tutoring sessions with an assignment you have already started and clear directions (preferably written instructions) from your instructor about the requirements of your class assignment.

How long is a tutoring session?
Ordinarily, each tutoring session is 45 minutes long, but if there are an unusual number of students needing to see the same person a tutoring session may need to end a little sooner, however it might also be possible to have a longer appointment if no one else needs tutoring at that particular time.

What should I do if I need to miss or if I am late to a tutoring session?
If you cannot keep an appointment, please call to cancel as soon as possible so that the tutoring staff can accommodate other students who might need help. The tutor will not be able to wait if you are late.

    Can I become a tutor?
Yes. Please go to the Learning Center Student Resources section below to print out a tutor application or visit your nearest learning center to pick up an application. Be aware that students interested in tutoring need to provide two instructor references in support of their application. Students should also have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and a grade of A for the course/s for which they would like to tutor.

    Are tutors evaluated?
A tutor evaluation form is available on the Learning Center Resources section. Feedback forms are also available at each of the Learning Centers or by request. To request a feedback form call 914-674-7402.

Is the Learning Center the only place on campus to get help with a class?
No! Your instructor is the primary source of information and help for a class. Use instructor office hours to speak one on one to your instructor. Also, check with the department through which the class is offered.
